Thrive Surprise - Gifts in a Jar.

I have a couple friends that are very creative and very interested in sharing with others and educating people. The moment I met them I knew we were going to be good friends.  They have a passion for learning and cooking so we were off to a great start.

I met them at a Cooking Demo.  They understood immediately how important it is to be prepared AND to be able to enjoy as well as use your food storage.  Even though they are in the middle of a major remodel in their home they have been build up their own Home Store as well as creating tasty meals using their Thrive foods.

To help share with others the joy and ease, as well as great taste, of the Shelf Reliance Thrive line of foods they created gifts in a jar.

Here are some of Ann & Eden's creations:

Stoneless Soup & Creamy Chicken and Vegetable Soup

My daughter and I searched out our neighbor who does food storage. Our original idea was for emergency use.  But we had already tossed out poor-tasting cans of food.  Not all storage is equal!  And dehydrating foods including meats, weren’t versatile. The demonstration and tasting party convinced me that we found the light, Shelf Reliance!

I used to teach children a lesson about cooperation and helping neighbors, especially amid scarcity and in need.  I read them the classic story of “Stone Soup”, which tells how hungry strangers persuade a village to give them food.  The children wanted to try the recipe.  They had fun and feast.  Subsequently, we made “Stone Soup” each Christmas season.  The minestrone soup has become a family favorite.  Now I’m saving hours of cooking time with Thrive food and able to put the stone soup in a jar, but re-naming it “Stoneless Soup”.  We experiment and add new Thrive products each month and continue to look for more economical entrées to put in a jar.  Last week we came up with Creamy Chicken & Vegetable Soup in a jar.

Since this past spring when we started incorporating Thrive foods in our daily diet, our eating habits are more healthy and time had been saved by having foodstuffs available in our own ‘new’ home-store.  Even my recent doctor’s check up revealed that my cholesterol has dropped low enough to be able to go off of cholesterol-lowering drugs!  I credit this to Thrive’s meats, which are extremely lean in fat and cholesterol due to the freeze dried process.

Thrive Foods at a HUGE markup!

A customer, now friend, called me to tell me what he found on on the web.  He was so upset by this he asked if he could do a blog post for us.  It's sad to see people wasting so much money, so of course I said yes.

John Davidson has been a Thrive Sisters customer for 10 months, now has a six month food store for his family.

I noticed that there are Thrive Foods for sale on Amazon.com available from several Sellers. When I compared their prices to what I would pay if I purchased the same product from a Shelf Reliance consultant I found that the Sellers' price was on average 46% greater than the consultant's price. The smallest difference I found was 25%, and the greatest was an enormous 110%!

All of the packages, below, can only be purchased through a consultant, such as Thrive Sisters.

SR item Description Seller's price SR price Mark up
25342 1 year dehydrated & FD food $1,387.90 $945.84 47%

All prices as of December 3, 2011

What can we learn from this? You will always get the best price from a Shelf Reliance consultant.

The disadvantages of purchasing from Amazon, apart from the cost, is the lack of support, which is what you will always have with a Shelf Reliance consultant. When working with a consultant you can learn about the Thrive products, have an opportunity to taste and try them, create your own individualized food store of the foods you and your family like, and create a Q for a "pay as you go" plan to spread the payments out to fit your budget. And you will always get the best discounts from a Shelf Reliance consultant.

If you are interested in purchasing any of the products mentioned above contact Thrive Sisters, and they will help you get the best value for your money.

Introducing Consultant Dianna Morgan.

I've had to opportunity to met a lot of great people since I've joined Shelf Reliance. The people I am meeting at the Food Demos have been a great deal of fun! The variety of Consultants has been a wonderful learning experience.  All walks of life, a wide variety of interests and varying reasons for becoming and Independent Consultant for Shelf Reliance.

Let me introduce one of my team members Dianna Morgan.  She will be working the Shelf Reliance booth with me at the WaHB Expo in the Pamona Fairplex November 12th!

As a Shelf Reliance Consultant since June, I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing the Thrive Food products through the home party.  From my own launch party in July to my latest party, I have had great success and am so thrilled to have already reached the Mentor rank.  I am most excited; however, to have assisted so many customers in adding to their food storage and feeling more prepared for emergencies.

I LOVE doing the home party!  Every party I try something a little different, but always enjoy serving samples of the Chili from the Thrive Cookbook and the a version of the Chicken Pasta Salad we received a few months back.  Watching the faces of party guests as they realize that they are truly eating real meat and vegetables in tasty everyday foods keeps me motivated for the next event. There is no better way to sell these amazing freeze-dried foods than having guests sample them in dishes they can make so easily at home in just a few minutes.

My goal when I first started in this business was to add to my own food "storage" as I have always been a believer in being prepared. However, in experimenting with the food products for my parties, I found how easy they were to have in my own pantry and use in my home cooking and baking.  And I'll admit it, I'm hooked. I'm not only getting prepared for emergencies, but I'm also prepared for last minute appetizers for a party, quick meals after a long day, and unexpected desserts for a church function. Now THAT'S my idea of being prepared!

You can read more about Dianna on her site.

Planning - how much food do I need for one year?

One of the most common questions I get is just how much food do I need for 3 months, 6 months or a year?  I am happy to respond by letting them know that Shelf Reliance has a fabulous flexible tool to assist in figuring this out.  There are other sites that do have planners, but often they are lacking in categories, items within the categories and in flexibility.

Your custom Food Storage Plan

"Planning how much food storage you need for your family is a daunting task. Shelf Reliance is here to take the stress out of getting your food storage supply and customizing it to fit your family. Whether you're starting from scratch or already have some existing food storage, we'll help you get everything you need."

You can use the planner to plan for one person or more than 20.  Create a plan for 3 months or as many as 24 months.  You can build your plan and change your mind on number of people and time frame.  It's great!

This is what information is used create your plan:

Once you have entered your basic information let the planner build your inventory list. The overall list looks like this:
You can see in this example that the One Person 12 Month Plan selected enough food from each category to more than cover the needs.  Now you can go into each category and review, add and/or delete items.  I LOVE this part!  Since I can then remove items I already have in stock or that my family will not use.  I can add  other available items or change the quantity of items selected.  I can then check the overall selections to ensure I'm still where I want to be for my personalized plan.

Once you are happy with your plan you can either add your list to your "pay as you go" plan, your Monthly Q.

OR you can purchase your own Customized Package!

Not ready to?  No problem!  You can save your plan and it is there for you when you are ready!

What I find extremely valuable is the Shelf Reliance "pay as you go" plan, the Monthly Q.  That is what makes this possible and affordable for everybody!

You are not locked into what you have created for a plan.  If you change your mind six months down the road and want to change your products in your Monthly Q it is very easy to do.  If you want to decide for yourself which products comes to you each month, you can do that.  If you want Shelf Reliance to automatically choose which items comes to you each month you can just sit back and let that happen.  I couldn't be any easier!  OK the only way it could be is if you had me set it up for you.  Even that option is available to you.

Ready to check out the planner for yourself?  Log in  (to save your plan) and start planning!

Thrive Tomato Powder - Simply a wonderful food storage item!

Everyone that I know that has the Thrive Tomato Powder and has used it absolutely loves it! For those friends that have it yet have never used it ... well ... after I give them my best SHOCKED look I immediately set about showing them some quick and simple ways it can be used.

For my friend Angie I did two quick recipes while she was visiting. First was putting on some ketchup to cook. I know you're wondering why make your own when it's so easy to pick up a bottle at the store. Many different reasons come to mind.

First of all we should not be dependent upon the grocery stores. Right now in Southern California there was talk of a strike that would have closed down maybe 350 stores. They believe it will be better for them economically, and for the safety of all, to just close their doors rather than to try to remain open during the strike. No matter which side you are on, we are all impacted.

Second, you get to control what is in your ketchup. If you don't want fructose corn syrup, salt or "natural flavorings" then make your own! It is so quick an simple.
Basic Thrive Ketchup
courtsey of ThriveSisters

1/2   Cup     Thrive Tomato Powder
1     Cup     Water
1/4   sm      Onion
1/2   Cup     Apple Cider Vinegar
1     tsp     Salt (optional)
1     Tbs     Brown Sugar (optional)
1             Cinnamon Stick (optional)

Mix all in a small sauce pan and bring up to a simmer. Let mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes. Remove the onion pieces and cinnamon stick. This can be refrigerated up to a week or so.

You can always choose to flavor and season your ketchup however it seems best to you. Sometimes I'll use a good splash of Worcestershire. Other times I will use garlic cloves and whole pepper corns. This ketchup also freezes well. You can make plops on parchment or waxed paper, ice cubes or containers and keep frozen for several months.

For lunch I made us One Pot Pasta, Meat & Sauce. NOT like a hamburger helper meal and not jarred sauce. I didn't take any pictures as we were talking too much and having too much fun before I realized this would make a nice posting. Later I will do a proper posting with pictures.

If that one didn't get you intrigued how about the idea of Tomato Caviar?

New Drink Mixes and Gluten Free Products!

The more we can save money, feed our families nutritious food, prepare ourselves and our friends and neighbors the better off we ALL are.

Using your Food Storage Grains for Breakfast

I've always love quinoa but didn't really cook with it very often. Probably because you usually find it in small, yet expensive, packages at the grocery store.  Now that it's easy to add it to my long term food storage; I have started using it more and more. Thank you Shelf Reliance and Thrive Gluten Free Grains
Quinoa has excellent nutritional value.  So what makes "keen-wah" so  nutritious?  Quinoa "grains" contain all 8 essential amino acids, good quantities of calcium, phosphorus, and iron.  Technically, quinoa is a seed, not a grain. It’s grown high in the Andes Mountains of South America. After harvest, the seeds need to be processed to remove the coating containing the bitter-tasting saponins. Quinoa "grains" are, in general, cooked the same way as rice and can be used in a wide range of sweet or savory dishes.

For breakfast we just made ...

Warm Berry Quinoa

The ingredients are simple:

1         Cup  Milk (or water, almond milk, soy works too)
1 1/2  Cups Water
1         Cup   Thrive Quinoa
1         Cup  Thrive Fruit ( I used blueberries and strawberries)
1/2     Cup  Nuts, optional

It is usually recommended that you rinse your quinoa.

Bring the liquids and the quinoa to a boil.  Stir in your freeze dried fruit, cover and simmer for 15 minutes.  Remove the pan from the heat and allow to sit for another 5 minutes.

Meanwhile I'm toasting nuts to add as one of the toppings.  Today we had pecans on hand but whatever nuts you like will work just as well.  I always toast nuts when I have time.

Toasted nuts have a deeper, more concentrated flavor. If I'm doing a large batch I spread them out on a baking sheet and toast in the oven at 350 for about 10 minutes. When I'm doing small amounts, like this morning, I use a dry skillet and toast them over medium high heat. One thing I learned it not to toast nuts and write a blog at the same time. My second batch worked out just fine.

Use whatever you like for toppings. I like honey, my son likes brown sugar, hubby has it plain. I add a LOT of cinnamon, my hubby can't stand it. Oh well. This batch made approximately 3 1/2 cups.

How ever you top it, or don't, you can feel good about feeding this to your family. Teenagers are suppose to have 50% protein and 50% complex carbs for a good breakfast before school. Here you have it in one bowl!

Another site with excellent quinoa recipes can be found at Cooking With Quinoa

I love many of her recipe ideas and have enjoy her Baked Quinoa and Oatmeal Breakfast

You can find more quinoa nutritional facts at Mother Nature Network.
